Join us on Monday, May 25, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Veterans Memorial Park in Abingdon, Virginia for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony. HSWCV President Walter Jenny will deliver a special historical presentation on the Battle of Saratoga — the turning point of the American Revolution. This free event is open to all and honors the memory of those who gave their lives in service to our country.

About the Presentation: The Battle of Saratoga

Fought in two engagements in September and October 1777 in upstate New York, the Battle of Saratoga was the first major American victory of the Revolutionary War and one of the most consequential military events in world history. American forces under General Horatio Gates defeated a British army commanded by General John Burgoyne, forcing the surrender of nearly 6,000 British and Hessian troops on October 17, 1777.

The victory had an immediate and dramatic impact on the course of the war. France, long reluctant to openly support the American cause, recognized the new nation and entered into a formal military alliance — bringing French troops, ships, and financial support that would prove decisive. Spain and the Netherlands followed, transforming what had been a colonial rebellion into a global conflict that stretched British resources to their limits.

HSWCV President Walter Jenny will explore the strategy, key figures, and lasting legacy of Saratoga and why historians have consistently ranked it among the most important battles in American history.

About the Program

The Historical Society of Washington County, Virginia is honored to welcome Arthur (Scrapper) Broady as the featured presenter for the 2026 Annual Meeting and Dinner. In a powerful and educational living-history presentation, Mr. Broady will portray his sixth great-grandfather, John Brodder (also spelled Broady), an African American patriot and enslaved man who served during the Revolutionary War. A retired educator, Air Force veteran, and respected community leader in Southwest Virginia, Broady is also recognized as the first African American male athlete at Emory & Henry College (now known as Emory & Henry University). Through his portrayal, he brings to light an often overlooked chapter of American history, sharing the story of his ancestor's service and sacrifice while honoring a legacy formally recognized by his 2017 induction into the Sons of the American Revolution.

John Broddy played a documented role in several key moments of the American Revolution. He served as the personal aide to Colonel (later General) William Campbell throughout the war. In that position, he accompanied Campbell into the heart of the fighting at the Battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780. After the death of Campbell in 1781, Broddy returned to the family farm in Virginia where he was formally emancipated in 1793 by Campbell's daughter and son-in-law. Local historical records suggest John Broddy lived to be 109 years old, eventually passing away in Saltville, Virginia.

Liberty Fest: Abingdon's History is America's History is a major three-day heritage festival taking place September 25–27, 2026 in Abingdon, Virginia. Part of Virginia's VA250 celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, Liberty Fest highlights Abingdon's pivotal role in early American history.

HSWCV at Liberty Fest

The Town of Abingdon has asked the Historical Society's historical interpreters to help bring the colonial era to life throughout the festival. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the rich heritage of Washington County firsthand.

About Liberty Fest & VA250

Liberty Fest serves as a cornerstone of Abingdon's participation in the VA250 commemoration — Virginia's statewide celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence. The festival focuses on preserving and promoting Abingdon's historic assets while recognizing the people and events that shaped the nation. Abingdon and Washington County have a particularly rich Revolutionary War legacy, as this region was home to the Over-Mountain Men who gathered before marching to the decisive Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780.

The Barter Theatre is expected to host related performances during this period, including Kings Mountain, a play commissioned by VA250 about that pivotal Revolutionary War battle.

Festival Highlights

  • Historical reenactments and living history encounters throughout downtown
  • HSWCV historical interpreters in colonial-era dress
  • Educational programming: lectures, tours, and interpretive programs
  • Focus on the Over-Mountain Men and the region's Revolutionary War impact
  • Cultural activities, arts, crafts, and Appalachian heritage exhibits
